Definition

Let $M$ be a differential manifold and $\omega$ a path in $M$. A variation of $\omega$ is a map $\alpha :(-ϵ,ϵ)\times [0,1]\to M$ such that $\alpha (0,t)=\omega (t)\mathrm{\forall }t$.
