The discriminant of a Riemannian metric, or more generally, a pseudo=Riemannian metric, on a differential manifold of dimension $n$ is defined as the canonical quadratic form on the $n^{th}$ exterior power of it obtained as follows: it maps two $n$-tuples to the determinant of the matrix of their inner products.
