Loose definition

The discriminant of a Riemannian metric, or more generally, a pseudo=Riemannian metric, on a differential manifold of dimension n is defined as the canonical quadratic form on the n^{th} exterior power of it obtained as follows: it maps two n-tuples to the determinant of the matrix of their inner products.
