The Stiefel-Whitney class associated to an oriented, real vector bundle of dimension $r$ over a differential manifold is a sum of characteristic classes in dimensions $i$, where $0\leq i\leq r$, with coefficients in $\mathbb {Z} /2\mathbb {Z}$.
